LUIS ALVAREZ (page 3)
Luis and Augustina lived in the "Santa Cruz" section of the Santa Gertrudis Division of the King Ranch. (located between Kingsville & Riviera.....west of Hwy 77). Luis and Augustina were both born in Matamoros, Mexico. However most of their children were born in the King Ranch-Santa Cruz Section. Accounts also place some of Luis' brothers and sisters also living in or near the "Santa Cruz" area ( ex. Rita Alvarez Quintanilla). According to Francisco Quintanilla, Jr., his sister, Tomasa Alvarez Quintanilla, one of Rita's daughter's, met her husband, Lauro Cavazos, Sr. there in "Santa Cruz". Francisco Jr. also tells a story that Lauro Sr., while working for the King Ranch-Norias Division was a defender of the King Ranch during the famous bandit attack of the Norias Section ranch house in August 1915. Lauro Sr., along with some Texas Rangers, army soldiers and several women & children were surrounded and attacked by 50+ bandits. When the ranch house defenders run out of ammunition, Lauro Sr., then only 22 yrs. old, made a heroic dash outside to a storage area to get more ammunition. He made it back safely as the shooting continued all aroung him. When the smoke cleared, 30 + bandits lay dead and the rest fled South and across the border. Lauro Sr., after serving in World War I, returned to the Santa Gertrudis Ranch (King Ranch) and became the head foreman.(1917 to 1957). His son, Dr. Lauro Cavazos, Jr., was president of Texas Tech University and was appointed by President Reagan to become U.S. Secretary of Education. His brother Richard is a retired 4 star U.S. Army General living in Austin, Texas. And the others; Robert lives in Kerrville, Joe in Houston and Sarita in Laredo. As I mentioned, Luis and Augustina had 20 children. However 10 died as children or infants. We don't know their names as of today or where they are buried. They could be buried in "Santa Cruz" or Riviera in "unmarked graves". The remaining children that grew up to become adults are listed above (4th generation), except we don't know about Gregoria; they say she died young when she was trampled by a horse or run over by a wagon. Note: Pedro Alvarez Jr., son of Pedro Alvarez is now the new police chief in Corpus Christi, Texas. And Norma Nelda Alvarez sister of the researcher was the Mayor Pro-Tem in Kingsville, Texas and now the first woman county commisioner in Kleberg County.
