Alfonso Alvarez (by Rose Marie Alvarez Tarlton)

Here is a story that I would like to share with everyone about my father, Alfonso R. Alvarez, son of Guadalupe and Benilde Alvarez.

My father carried the true spirit of the Angel in his own way...

When my father was alive he liked going out on short, not too distant car rides.
Sometimes he would take my mother and us kids, sometimes he would take my younger brother Richard and the dog, Baron.
So that you can get a visual of this story, try to imagine a small four door 1964 red Ford Falcon - my father used this car for work and it was used as a family car too. My father use to haul his oil cans and railroad tools in this small car and then when we were to go out in it we had to clean it to make it presentable.
One Sunday morning my father and Richard and Baron took off on one of these adventures to Canyon Lake.
They were gone for most part of the day. As the day was drawing to a close, I remember asking Mom where daddy and Richard could be, Mom didn't look too concerned and replied "ya sabes tu papa,no tarda en llegar, Ricardo anda con él, junto con el perro". Seeing that Mom wasn't too worried I felt that everything was okay.It must have been about thirty minutes after questioning Mom about dad when we see my father return home.

Alfonso Alvarez (1988)

Looking through the window we see to our surprise the four doors open to the car, out came my brother Richard, my father, our dog Baron and much to our surprise six females. My mother's expression "B-u-e-n-o" and I am sure the meaning behind it wasn't Good. My reaction was to go out there to see who the hell these women were in my father's car. The young ladies were all standing out in the front yard waiting for my dad to explain to my mother who they were and why they were in his company. My father explaining to the young ladies not to worry cause Mom was a very understanding wife...my mother's eyes and expressions were those of "create"!

My father quickly explained to my mother that their car had broken down in the Canyon Lake area and that he had stopped to help them and soon realized that he could not get their car to start, so he brought them home with him so that they could get in touch with their families in San Antonio. As Mom and I realized that dad was their angel in their time of need we quickly recomposed our chongos and welcomed the young ladies into the house. They got in touch with their families and within a couple of hours they were united with family members. We stayed in touch with the young ladies for a while and then we lost touch. But to this day we still remember them and often think of them and hope that they carry the memory of the Angel, my father Alfonso R Alvarez, who stopped to help them that one afternoon when their car broke down in the Canyon Lake area.

I hope you enjoyed this story of my father, there are many more stories and in time I will share them with you.

Respectfully Yours,
